This interest runs throughout Powers’ career,” while his hometown Austin Chronicle has affectionately concluded that “Powers’ name stands alongside some of country music’s most enduring classics.”  Now, for the first time, in the pages of his memoirs, THE SPREE OF ’83, Freddy recounts first-hand the highly-entertaining and emotionally-touching story behind his decades-long roller-coaster ride through the music business, to the top of the charts, and his inspiring struggle in recent years battling Parkinson’s disease, all while his legacy endured through generations of fans.  Helping Freddy tell his story are exclusive interviews from fellow country music legends WILLIE NELSON, MERLE HAGGARD, John Rich, Tanya Tucker, The Voice finalist/Powers’ protégé Mary Sarah, and hosts of other Nashville luminaries.

 “Spirit of the Wind”

by Bunny Throckmorton

Biography, Travel

ISBN: 978-1-68419-259-5

spiritThis book is the story of sailing across the ocean from Guam to San Francisco on our wonderful sailboat, the “Spirit of the Wind”, a forty-one foot Taiwan-built Ketch designed by William Garden. A group of twenty-something kids went to Guam looking for the meaning of life, bought a boat, fixed it up, learned to sail across the ocean. It was a beautiful and spiritual journey while at times was totally and completely terrifying. It introduced me to the South Pacific Islands and the wonderful and gracious people there; it was truly “A Paradise.” The warm trade winds that I can feel sometimes in my dreams, the feel and sounds of the wind in the sails and moving through fear. I learned to improvise in the moment, how to deal with life then there was no land for weeks on end with just the horizon all around as if we were sailing on a mirror. It introduced me to the wonders of the ocean and its inhabitants.

This trip changed my life and what I thought the world was. It enabled me to see, feel and do things that I didn’t know I was capable of.  It was a serious lesson in being with three other people, all men, in a forty foot sailboat with very little privacy. It taught me that the weather goes on; it doesn’t help to pray for it to change and is bigger than us. It was transformational in so many ways, facing death almost daily.

Racing hydroplane boats on the Sacramento River, taking a train to Washington alone when she was 13. Riding a bus to Florida and meeting the civil rights marchers that were headed to the south and experiencing face to face segregated bus waiting rooms. Camping, fly-fishing and exploring the beautiful back country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with her family and Chip. Londyn Skye is a comical, 39 year old, mother of two, ex all-American collegiate athlete, million mile lady trucker phenom, and a romance novel junkie! She readily admits that her desire to become an author was for a very silly reason: FRUSTRATION! After years of reading romance,

she was frustrated by the rarity of intense plots, memorable side characters, emotional depth, and interesting couples in many love stories.  As a way to escape life troubles, Londyn began creating stories in the fantasy world of her mind when she was a child. As an adult, her frustrations with the genre of romance lead her to challenge herself to turn her comforting fantasies into a novel that had all of the elements that, in her opinion, were missing from many books. That challenge lead her to write “The Prodigy Slave” trilogy.  Wanting

the utmost quality for her readers, she has diligently worked to balance the saga with humor, drama, romance, unpredictable plots, and devious neurotic characters that are equally as captivating as the erotic love scenes between the fascinating heroes and heroines. She has painstakingly painted her fantasies with words in a way that she hopes readers will see the images just as beautifully as she does in her own unique mind. Most importantly, she hopes that everyone will feel just as emotionally moved and inspired by the heroes and heroines in her love story as she is. “Trying to Walk Like a Man: The Chris Wiehl Playbook”

by Christopher Wiehl with John Turner

Biography, Autobiography, Self-Help

ISBN: 978-1-68419-837-5

trying

Adversity. Every living person faces it. It’s part of the human condition. I’m Christopher Wiehl, an actor and filmmaker, and I’ve had plenty of challenges of my own. Some people may not think that’s the case, but I bet they’ve never had brain fluid leaking from their nose.

I’d been living what some would have considered a charmed life when, in 2008, doctors discovered a brain tumor next to the auditory nerve in my right ear. It nearly killed me, but I’m still here. And through it all, one lesson I’ve learned is that the adversity people face is not as important as their response to it. It’s how they overcome the obstacles—how they learn to walk like a man, as Bruce Springsteen would say—that keeps them moving forward.

In Trying to Walk Like a Man, we’ll talk about how I’m trying to survive in the cutthroat entertainment industry—and while you’re here, we’ll discuss our own lives. We’ll talk about some of the adversity we all face, and we’ll see if we can figure out what keeps us putting one foot in front of the other. Pull up a chair, won’t you?

In 1998, Chris added writer, producer, director to his bio when he formed Yakima Productions. The company has released three films and currently houses over a dozen scripts.

In 2008, Chris’ life took a real turn when he received a brain tumor diagnosis. With his baby boy only a month old and a marriage already on the rocks, Christopher’s life was in peril. He had a successful surgery to remove the tumor, but had major complications during recovery. It’s been a long climb back to relevance in the entertainment world and redemption in his personal world.

Today Chris is healthy and happy again, working in Hollywood, living at the beach, and living a life he thought was out of reach just a few years before.

Roberta Wilson is a pastry chef living in Chicago. A baker by day, and a storyteller by night. Keeping a diary since grade school, fueled the love of words, and telling stories. Experience gives stories substance, and a great love for desserts, has given me a desire to follow this dream.roberta-wilson

My parents were far from average, and because of this, they taught me to embrace the unusual ways that make me special. My late Father was a civil rights leader. He was one of the first in Kankakee County. Learning to be tough when you don’t think you’re strong enough, has been something I’ve lived my life doing, especially now that I don’t have my parents.

My love for baking and writing began during Summer vacations from school. I wasn’t old enough to drive or work yet, and so I baked cookies, and wrote stories. As I grew older, my experiences shaped my world, and I wrote them down.

Persistence is my daily tonic, and impossible things are just a dare waiting to be unleashed. I just want to tell really good stories, and make awesome pastries, and give memorable experiences. I have books that I love so much, I carry them in my purse. I hope my books will be just as good with hard work, and love.

“Damaged Wings”

by Sharrod Kenny with A.J. Reilly

Religion

ISBN: 978-1-94327-731-5

damageFinding religion saved him from the trenches of life on the street. Like a wild animal having to adapt in a city jungle, this is the transformation of a young boy growing up in an environment of consistent pain, sorrow and grief. While most homes provide safety and protection, this boy learned early that if he didn’t adapt to the world around him, his life would be cut short. Each day was a test of survival and that was his purpose: to survive at all costs even if it meant condemnation.

Growing up in inner city Baltimore, Sharrod Kenney made choices, good and bad, in order to survive in a place where the lines between right and wrong were inevitably blurred by circumstance. The decisions he made were based on the need to survive with the majority weighing not only emotionally heavy on his heart and soul, but physically, as well. In hopes of letting others know there is always a way out, Sharrod Kenney pulls back the exterior of his life to delve into the details. This is the journey of a life at times uncomfortably familiar behind closed doors yet remarkably unique in its entirety.

“It’s Not Because I’m Better Than You”

by Don J. Carey III

Religion, Self-Help

ISBN: 978-1-68419-251-9

becauseHave you ever wondered what makes some people more successful than others? Well it does not always boil down to talent. Often times there are far more variables involved that causes some to rise above rest. There is no doubt that we all want to be successful in life. The million dollar question, however, is how should we go about obtaining that success? Yes there are some who are just flat out better. Those who, no matter what they do, possess an innate ability to come out on top of any situation. But that group is the exception to the rule, not it’s standard. So how do the vast majority of successful people, including myself, become successful? As marvelously stated in the title, It’s Not Because I’m Better Than You. I and many others have tapped into some crucial life principles that have truly transformed the way we live our lives. Contrary to our wishful thinking, there are no magical success buttons in life. Yet that does not mean success is a far off foreign concept that cannot be actualized. I truly believe that if you catch hold of these principles, they will go a long way in helping you just like they did for myself and for countless others.

Have you ever wondered what makes some people more successful than others? Well it does not always boil down to talent. Often times there are far more variables involved that causes some to rise above. In this book the Author recounts significant moments in his life and connects those moments to crucial life principles that he believes can have a huge impact on the outcome of one’s life. This is a great book for anyone, especially our youth, who wants to be successful, but do not know how to practically go about preparing for that success. There is no one way to obtain whatever level of success you are looking for. Don is a firm believer that true success is not only define by the number of milestones we obtain for ourselves, but also by the number of people we reach back and pull along the way. This book is my way of hopefully pulling someone to become the person they know they can be.

“Tower Blues: Solving the Riddle of Confinement”

by Inga Wiehl

Biography, Autobiography, History

ISBN: 978-1-68418-293-0

towerTower Blues is a play on The Blue Tower, named for its exterior walls covered by blue clinkers. It stood cheek to jowl with the royal castle in seventeenth century Copenhagen and served as a prison for the worst malefactors of the time.

On August 16, 1661, Leonora Christine Ulfeldt, daughter of King Christian IV and half-sister of the reigning king, Frederik III, was arrested and brought to the Tower on unspecified charges. Unwilling to offer potentially incriminating information about herself and her husband, Corfitz Ulfeldt, Leonora eventually forces the team of high ranking men sent for questioning to reveal the grounds on which she is held captive. She is suspected of complicity in her husband’s acts of high treason against the Danish crown. Her refusal to know anything about betrayals sentences her to twenty-two years of imprisonment in a damp, filthy, rat-infested cell that’s lit only by a small mesh covered window just below the ceiling.

Given nothing with which to occupy her mind or hands, she must rely on herself for continued survival. As she agonizes about the whereabouts of her husband and seven children, she suffers through the dark night of the soul to wrestle from nothing a life she may sustain. Her well trained mind and skillful hands find work, and her reborn faith in God straighten her shoulders for the cross she imagines herself to be carrying.

Tower Blues is the story of a woman who, from the beginning and all the days to follow – in castles and in prison – remained interested in the world around her, no matter how sordid or trivial. She never allowed the poison of indifference to penetrate her system. She knew that even hatred is less destructive than indifference.

“Finally, A Parade for You”

by Molly Burton

Biography, Autobiography

ISBN : 978-1-945177-10-1

finallyFinally, A Parade for You is a collection of mini-biographies of  United States war veterans who served their country during the Vietnam War. These brave people sacrificed their peaceful lives and joined one of the many life-changing cultural upheavals of the mid-20th century. They were not famous, nor from privileged backgrounds. Today, most of them still battle Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and far too many are ill with such diseases as diabetes, cancer, and other related disorders. They now find peace, and though they struggle with it, grace.

At the end of the biographical section are two chapters on PTSD and Toxic Exposure (ie. Agent Orange). A small history, symptoms, individual experiences, and ways to get help either through the Veterans Administration (VA), or through private medical personnel/complimentary health care will be offered. The author’s own tips for the VA personnel to be more helpful to veterans of all battles and foreign /domestic deployments are included.

The stories contained in this book were an act of faith on the part of the veterans who shared their stories. Difficult to face because of the horrors endured and ongoing, the telling and re-telling of their tale during this writing has actually brought some measure of healing, as repetition of an experience makes it just that: a story of long ago. Please honor them before it’s too late, as they are dying every day. Let their stories be inspiring and healing. This ‘Parade’ is for all of us.
